Continuing our thoughts from the end of last year, I am sure you have all heard of Sodium Lauryl Sulphate. It is commonly used as a thickener and foaming agent in shampoos and toothpastes, but did you know it is also used as a wetting agent in garage floor cleaners, in engine degreasers and auto cleaning products. It has been shown to be a skin irritant and it is thought it could have a degenerative effect on the cell membrane due to its protein denaturing properties. It can also maintain residual levels in major organs of the body from skin contact. Carcinogen nitrates can form in the manufacturing of SLS, or by its combination with other nitrogen bearing ingredients within a formulation. Sodium Laureth sulphate (SLES) is the alcohol form. It has higher foaming qualities and is slightly less irritating, but may cause more drying. Check your bathroom toiletries and consider swapping to organic products without any harsh chemicals or toxins.

Aluminium is a metallic element used extensively in the manufacture of aircraft components, prosthetic devices and as an ingredient in antiperspirants, antacids and antiseptics. If your antiperspirant contains aluminium, there is a possibility it could be harming you. Antiperspirants do more than prevent perspiration: they also block the ability of the skin to flush out toxins, which can then seep down to the breasts. Excessive levels of aluminium have shown on some women with breast cancer. Aluminium has also been linked to Alzheimer’s disease.

It is generally believed that the skin acts as a protective barrier, yet it also acts as a transport system. When toxins are applied to the skin, they go straight to the blood and cannot be metabolised (neutralised) by the body. In spite of this knowledge, the ingredients in some of our most commonly used personal care products have not been changed. We may ask why, and I suspect the answer may partly be because they are cheap and easy to obtain.
Follow us and over the next few weeks we will take you through some of these potentially harmful ingredients. I looked at a renewing cream of a popular brand today for aging skin. I was amazed to find that it contained 50 different ingredients many of which were unpronounceable. In contrast the Perrins Silk Comfort, for example, contains just 13 ingredients but every one of these is recognisable and completely natural. For example Beeswax, grape seed oil, Jasmine, Peppermint and Rosemary oils, Vitamins A,D, & E. Which would you rather have on your skin?
If you are searching for something to bring you relief from the symptoms of Lichen Sclerosus, why not try Perrins Creme Complete. Completely natural and now available in the UK
